At our Christmas Market we will be featuring Old MacDonald Kennels & Animal Services! In lieu of admission, we ask that you bring in a contribution to this incredible local rescue. Let's help those without a voice!
A message from the rescue:
"We’re a no-kill domestic rescue shelter, and our work involves everything from providing basic care and necessities for the animals in our care, to promoting moral and ethical development within communities dealing with strays and abused or neglected animals.
Our rescued animals are not just local, but also from all over the province. We often make lengthy trips to the communities in northern Alberta to deal with their ongoing issues with strays and abandoned animals. These trips can take days and we typically end up coming back with a truckload of dogs and cats that are in need of medical care. Our goal on these trips is to not only save the animals, but to also educate the communities on proper care and the importance of spaying and neutering. We would like to create spay and neuter programs for these communities to try and reduce the amount of strays running rampant without proper shelter or food. Many of the dogs we come across in Northern Alberta are also feral and require rehabilitation. We have worked very hard to build positive relationships with the citizens of these areas so that they allow us to enter their communities and assist them as much as possible.
When in our care, these animals are all fully vetted and receive any veterinary care they may need to improve their quality of life before being put up for adoption. Every dog or cat that comes to us is spayed and neutered before leaving the shelter. The medical bills can be quite costly and we end up paying out of pocket for most of the expenses. There have been times where our shelter has been over capacity, but we don’t like to turn animals away so we try to do whatever we can to make the room. We constantly deal with an array of injuries and illnesses such as broken bones, mange, amputations, and many other problems. We also have many special needs animals at our facility. Our adoption fees cover the basic costs such as spays and neuters, food, and enrichment items such as toys and treats. The adoption fee does not cover medical expenses that the animal may have incurred while in our care.
We’ve also taken on the role of animal control and municipal bylaw for the town of Ponoka and the surrounding areas. We’re the ones who take in any animals who may have gotten lost and have been picked up by a citizen. We do our best to locate the dogs or cats owners and reunite them before making the decision to put them up for adoption. We work closely with the town of Ponoka to insure that pets are being registered and have proper identification to make our job easier in these situations.
We have a permanent facility and we also have a foster program, which helps ease any space issue we may come across when we are over capacity."
Monetary donations are welcome or items listed below provided by the rescue:
-Blankets
-Puppy/Kitten food
-Cat/Dog food
-Pellet type litter
-Toys
